Wondering What the Hunting Laws and Regulations are in North Dakota?

The mission of the North Dakota Game and Fish Department is to protect, conserve and enhance fish and wildlife populations and their habitat for sustained public consumptive and nonconsumptive use.When hunting seasons begin in Massachusetts, all hunters must have a valid hunting license along with a other required permits depending on the hunted specie. It is unlawful to hunt without landowner’s permission as well as hunting being under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It is also unlawful to sell wild game meat or kill or shoot-at any game without the intention of retrieving it. No hunter shall shoot near occupied buildings, shoot across public roads, and hunt in a powered-on vehicle as well as use any aircraft as an aid to locate wild game. It is also unlawful to destroy natural habitats and hunt on Sundays, only exception would be on a licensed private land.

North Dakota’s highest moose densities today are found in the northwestern part of the state. State law requires a valid hunting license, a hunting certificate, and a moose permit. All moose license holders are able to hunt during the regular season (any legal firearm or bow) and the bow season (bows only) but are restricted to unit and type of moose designated on license.Immediately after an animal has been killed, the hunter must indicate the date of kill by cutting out the appropriate month and day from the tag provided with the license, and securely attach it to the antler. Elk and moose lottery license holders are required to provide hunter harvest information no later than January 15, 2021. No  hunter shall hunt more than one moose of the type designated on license. Type of moose includes “antlerless” or “any” moose.

BIGHORN SHEEP

Bighorn sheep are the rarest big game species in North Dakota. The total population in North Dakota is approximately 330 animals. All hunters are required to have a hunting license, a hunting certificate, and a bighorn sheep license. Immediately after an animal has been killed, the hunter must indicate the date of kill by cutting out the appropriate month and day from the tag provided with the license, and securely attach it to the horn. All big game hunters are required to wear a head covering and an outer garment above the waistline of solid daylight fluorescent orange color, totaling at least 400 square inches. No hunter shall hunt more than one (1) male bighorn sheep.

CANADIAN GEESE

The Canada goose is common to abundant during migration and nesting seasons in North Dakota. All hunters are required to have a valid hunting license, a federal migratory bird stamp, and a Harvest Information Program registration. The daily bag limit varies in different areas of North Dakota.
